The Monterey Public Library’s 1849 Legacy Society recognizes those donors who have made gifts to preserve California’s First Public Library for the future.
The Society acknowledges those who:
- have made a gift to the MPL endowment
- have made plans for a bequest, trust distribution, or other deferred gift to the Friends & Foundation or MPL
- were charter members of the original “1849 Society,” which commemorated lifetime gifts of $1849 to the endowment
1849 Legacy Society members join a distinguished group of individuals who originally established the Monterey Public Library in 1849, bringing the first collection of 900 books—in English and in Spanish—around Cape Horn to the Port of Monterey.
Members receive invitations to all special events and Insider Updates. In addition, members’ names are listed, in perpetuity, in a permanent Legacy Society display at the Library and on the Library’s website.
Please consider letting us know that you have made a provision for the Monterey Public Library in your estate plans by filling out and returning the 1849 Legacy Society Confidential Notification.
